A Variety of Events Bringing Visitors to Savannah

by · May 15, 2012

What a spring it’s been in Savannah.  For those of you that have been here during the past couple of months, you know what I mean. And for you folks out there that have not visited yet, what the heck are you waiting for?

Like most cities, Savannah boasts having a number of special events throughout the year.  The difference here is that we do events of all types.  Some that are much more focused on locals celebrating their heritage, like the Savannah Asian Festival coming up in June.  And others designed to also attract visitors from around the world.

Over the past four or five years, Savannah has seen a proliferation of new activities added to its stable of marquis events that make our city so special.  Five come specifically to mind:  the Savannah Book Festival, the Savannah Craft Brew Festival, the Savannah Ocean Exchange, the Savannah Rock ‘n Roll Marathon and most recently, the Savannah Tall Ships Challenge.

Sprinkled throughout the year, the events listed above complement those that have been attracting folks here for years, including the Savannah Black Heritage Festival, Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens, the Savannah Film Festival, and of course, the ever popular Savannah Music Festival.

Each designed to not only engage folks from around the Savannah metropolitan area, which includes nearly 350,000 people, but also attract enthusiasts from around the country, and these days, from around the world.

It’s especially fun to meet folks like Terrence and Susan Blakely, from outside of London (England, that is), who told me: “Each year we come to the States on holiday for a week.  While exploring options on the Internet last year, we discovered the Savannah Craft Brew Festival in September.  We ultimately planned a seven day vacation built around enjoying our favorite hobby and discovering a new city.”

We’ve had a number of stories like that over the past six to eight weeks that have either found or come back for our 17-day music festival or more recently, 14 domestic and international tall ships.  When a ship like the HMS Bounty, made famous in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, stops in, families are bound to follow.

We here in Savannah love welcoming new visitors to town.  Whether its for craft beer, famous authors or to run on our beautiful marathon course around our famous Historic District, you’re likely going to find a Savannah experience that is perfect for you.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!
